Which port your ship uses changes everything, and it is decided close to the day. Four hours ashore holds the Chora or the north of the island, not both, and not Delos. Book a vehicle before you sail: the taxis are gone twenty minutes after the gangway opens.

First: which port did you get?

Everything about a Mykonos port day starts here. Large ships normally berth at the New Port at Tourlos, 2.5 km north of the Chora. The Old Port, at the edge of town, is also used, sometimes by tender. Which one you get is decided close to the day, so plan for both.

The honest answer about Delos is that four hours does not hold it once you have crossed from Tourlos. Six is tight. Eight works if your ship is alongside early, and a boat day out to Rhenia is the better use of eight hours anyway. The Delos page has the 2026 timetable.

Doing it independently, and when that is the better call

With eight hours and a berth at the Old Port, you do not need to book anything. The Chora costs nothing, the KTEL bus reaches Ornos and Platis Gialos for a couple of euros, and the Sea Bus is €2. That is a good day for about €10, and it is the right answer for a confident traveller with time.

What you cannot do independently in a port day is the north of the island. No bus serves Armenistis, Fokos or Ftelia, and the taxi supply is gone twenty minutes after the gangway opens. If the lighthouse and Ano Mera are what you came for, a booked vehicle is not a luxury, it is the only mechanism.

The timing traps

Everyone lands at once. The Chora between ten and five on a ship day is a different town from the Chora at eight in the morning.
Taxis vanish. Book pickup rather than plan to find one.
A late ship is not the operator's problem. One listing states plainly that no refund is due if you miss the tour because the ship arrived late — which is different from the ship not docking at all.
