Mykonos Greece Map: Two Ports, One Town, Seven Meeting Points

Mykonos is 85 square kilometres with two passenger ports, one pedestrian town and a bus network that covers the south well and the north not at all. Which port your ship uses decides where you stand on the morning of your tour, and it is not always decided in advance. The seven meeting points below are where the tours in Mykonos island actually start, and they are not all in the same place.

Where Mykonos sits in the Cyclades

Mykonos Town (Chora), Mykonos 846 00, Greece

The map loads only when you ask it to, so nothing is requested from Google before you press the button.

The island

Mykonos lies in the northern Cyclades, about 150 km south-east of Athens. Tinos is across the strait to the north-west, Naxos and Paros to the south, and Delos and Rhenia sit two nautical miles west.

The town

Chora, also called Mykonos Town, is on the west coast beside the Old Port. It is closed to traffic and crosses on foot in about twenty minutes.

The airport

Mykonos Airport (JMK) is about 4 km south of the Chora, inland from Ornos.

What leaves from hereFerries to Piraeus, Rafina and the CycladesEvery scheduled Delos sailing

The important line in that table is the last one: every scheduled Delos sailing leaves from the Old Port, and most cruise ships berth at the New Port. If Delos is your plan, the crossing between the two is part of the plan.

The Sea Bus between them

Cruise ships alongside the New Port at Tourlos, seen from the hill

Fare: €2 per person, one way

Crossing time: About twelve minutes

Frequency: Every thirty minutes, and every fifteen when a cruise ship is in

Season: 1 April to 31 October

New Port stops: The cruise dock, and the Tourlos marina

Old Port stops: Beside the Town Hall, where the Delos vessels dock, and the KTEL bus station

It is the reason the 2.5 km road with no pavement does not matter. Out of season it does not run, and a taxi is the fallback.

The airport, and how close it is to everything

Four kilometres from the Chora, about ten minutes by road, and closer to Ornos and Platis Gialos than to the town. Several of the boats leave from jetties on that same southern stretch, so a morning arrival and an afternoon sailing is a realistic combination if your bags are already at the hotel.

Chora on foot

An empty whitewashed lane in the Chora before the day trippers arrive

The lanes were laid out to disorient raiders and they still disorient everybody. That is the charm and it is also why a walking tour is worth more here than in a gridded town. The fixed points are the harbour front, the Kastro quarter with Panagia Paraportiani, Little Venice on the Alefkandra waterfront, and the windmills on the ridge above them. Everything else you find twice by accident.

Nine rows, seven of them fixed points and two of them your own door. If you are short of time or arriving by ship, the tours in the last row are the ones that remove the problem entirely.

Not sure which port you will get?

Two of the shore excursions here publish a meeting point for each and confirm the right one about a week before you sail.

Buses run from two stations rather than one, which catches people out: Fabrika for the south-west, the Old Port station for Ano Mera and the south-east. Fares are a few euros and you buy at the kiosk rather than on board.

Questions about getting around Mykonos

Which port will my cruise ship use?
Either. Large ships normally berth at the New Port at Tourlos, but the Old Port beside the Chora is also used, and it is decided close to the day. Two of the shore excursions here publish a meeting point for each and confirm which about a week ahead.
Can I walk from the New Port into town?
It is about 2.5 km and the road has no proper pavement, so it is not the walk it looks like on a map. The Sea Bus runs the crossing instead: 2 euros per person, about twelve minutes, every thirty minutes and every fifteen when a ship is in, from 1 April to 31 October. A taxi takes five minutes.
Do I need a car on Mykonos?
Not for the Chora, which is closed to traffic and walkable end to end. The KTEL buses reach Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paradise, Elia and Ano Mera on a published timetable, which covers the south. A tour or a hire vehicle is how you reach the north and the lighthouse, where the buses do not go.
Where do Mykonos tours meet?
In seven different places, which is why the meeting point is on every card. The boats leave from Tourlos at the New Port, from the Old Port, and from jetties at Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paraga and Agios Ioannis Diakoftis. Land tours meet at Fabrika bus station, the Manto Mavrogenous statue or the cruise terminal gate, or collect you from your door.
